Given Kanye's past delays, many fans expected that he, if anyone, would miss the February 22 deadline given Lil Durk's announcement about 7220. Unfortunately, Durkio missed the February 22 deadline first.
The OTF rapper (who even trotted his competition) has delayed his debut album at the last minute (despite promising fans an all-Chicago album showdown). Durk announced on Instagram Monday night (February 21) that 7220 will now arrive on March 11.
A new single from the Englewood native, titled "AHHH HA," and the official cover art of the album, a blurry photo of a young Durk, masked the bad news. “7220 the album droppin 3/11. Ahhh Ha out right now go run it up,” he wrote on Instagram.
“AHHH HA” is a menacing, hard-hitting track produced by Southside, TM88, TooDope, Nuki, JiggaSosa and NFE Paris that finds Lil Durk responding to NBA YoungBoy and his crew.
“Just got out the feds, you bring up murders with your police ass,” he raps, referencing YoungBoy’s recent stint in jail, before taking aim at the Baton Rouge rapper’s baby mother, Jania Meshell, who dated King Von before his death. “I told Von to leave that bitch alone, she post on OnlyFans.”
During his January mixtape Colors, NBA YoungBoy subtly dissed the late King Von and the O Block neighborhood in Chicago, home to Durk, Von, and Chief Keef.
“AHHH HA” is the latest preview of 7220 following “Pissed Me Off,” “Lion Eyes” and “Broadway Girls” featuring country star Morgan Wallen.
In the meantime, Kanye West's Donda 2 is still on track for a February 22 release. Kanye won't release the album on traditional streaming platforms, such as Spotify, Apple Music and TIDAL; he'll release it exclusively on his $200 stem player.
“Today artists get just 12% of the money the industry makes,” the Chicago rap icon said of the move. “It’s time to free music from this oppressive system. It’s time to take control and build our own.”
Immediately, he saw the benefits of his decision. Kanye has pulled in more than $2 million in revenue since making the announcement on February 17. His stem player features an innovative design that allows listeners to customize songs.
It is expected that Mr. West will release Donda 2 at a listening event at Miami's LoanDepot Park on Tuesday (February 22). Ye's stem player will likely be able to play the album following the event - although when that will be remains to be seen.
