Nicolas Cage Addresses Possibility of ‘Face/Off 2’ and ‘National Treasure 3’
Nicholas Cage, unquestionably one of the most consistently compelling actors of his generation, has graciously offered the world a new interview in which he talks about sequel rumor regarding Face/Off and National Treasure.
Cage talked to the Hollywood Reporter about the Face/Off references tucked into next month's release of the Cage-plays-Cage action comedy 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent', with the publication noting recent reports of a Cage-less (and John Travolta-less) remake in the works.
A plan of this sort has not been disclosed to Cage. As well as pointing out a general distrust of such reports, he also mentioned National Treasure 3, which received its last update report in 2020.
“I have not heard hide nor hair about [Face/Off 2],” Cage told THR. “So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah. But [director] John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much—that something like that would have to be a sequel.”
Back in 2020, Bruce Buckheimer told Collider that a new National Treasure film was still in development, though a franchise-expanding Disney+ series featuring a new cast was much further along. As of January, an update regarding the cast came in. Lisette Alexis will be the show's lead.
The director of Godzilla vs. Kong has reportedly signed on to direct that Face/Off sequel, although its current status remains unclear.
In the new Cage article, the actor also expresses gratitude for the journey that led him to a film like Unbearable Weight, noting that he initially turned down the idea "three or four times" before accepting it.
