In 1991, Will Smith starred as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, with DJ Jazzy Jeff as his sidekick "Jazz." The beloved sitcom ran for six seasons, seamlessly blending Hip Hop with comedy until the Banks family became household names.
Twenty-six years after its final episode, the show is getting a reboot - but not the way you might expect. Peacock premiered the first episode of Bel-Air on February 13. The show follows the lives of Will, Jazz, Carlton, Hillary, Ashley, Uncle Phil, Jeffery, and Aunt Viv.
With Jabari Banks as Will, the show follows the smart teen from the mean streets of Philly to the utopian world of Bel-Air where he moves in with his wealthy family to escape "a couple of guys who were up to no good."
There have only been four episodes released to date, but the storyline is instantly compelling to anyone who grew up watching The Fresh Prince. In an interview with HipHopDX, DJ Jazzy Jeff discussed the new series as he praised executive producer and longtime rhyme partner Will Smith."I wasn't involved in the making of the show, but I'm one of the hosts of the Bel Air Podcast that will be released soon.As for me, I'm ecstatic because, without giving any spoilers, if someone were to take The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the '90s and move it to the '20s to '22s, they could not have done it better."I think more people will be talking about Bel-Air than the Super Bowl."The show is that good.I'm blown away by this.Probably the best show I've ever seen."
"I was not involved in the making of the show, but I am one of the hosts of the Bel Air Podcast that will be released soon. If someone had moved The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the '90s to '20s or '22s and put a dramatic spin on it, I don't think they could have done better.
Bel-Air is going to be talked about more than the Super Bowl. If I remove myself from it, this is mind-blowing. It might be my favorite show ever."
